I. General

1. How do I register for the 18th Regional Spelling Bee competition?

Participants can register through the English 1 Center where they study. Complete information regarding schedules and locations for the Regional Spelling Bee can be found on our official Instagram account: @spellingbee.indonesia

Yes, the 18th Regional Spelling Bee is open to the public. Participants may register through any English 1 Center.

No. Participants are not allowed to register multiple times at different centers.

The Spelling Bee consists of three main stages:

  1. Preliminary Round – conducted in written form.
  2. Semifinal Round – also written, with a higher difficulty level.
  3. Final Round – conducted orally, where the Announcer presents the prompts in a word–sentence–word format. Participants must spell the word correctly in front of the judges.

Yes. All registered participants who join the competition will receive an official participation certificate. Winners will receive winner certificates, and additional prizes may vary depending on each organizing center’s policy.

Both British and American spellings are accepted. The competition uses the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English as the primary reference.

The competition is open to Elementary School (SD) and Junior High School (SMP) students (or equivalent) from across Indonesia. Each category has its own age and grade requirements based on the official competition guidelines. Participants must be Indonesian citizens and provide a birth certificate or passport as proof of identity.

Participants will go through the following stages:

  1. Register at their respective English 1 Center (or the nearest center) to join the Regional Spelling Bee.
  2. Regional winners from each category will qualify for the National Spelling Bee.
  3. The re-registration process for the National level will be fully assisted by the English 1 Center where the participant is registered.
  4. If a qualified participant is unable to attend the National Competition, their spot may be replaced by the fourth-place winner from the Regional round.

Travel and accommodation costs for the National Competition are not covered by English 1.
All expenses related to transportation, lodging, and personal needs are the responsibility of the participant and/or their accompanying parent(s).
English 1 will provide recommended accommodation options and the event schedule to help participants plan their trip.

English 1 recommends a three-day stay, as follows:

  • D -1: Arrival and technical preparation; also familiarize yourself with the route to the venue.
  • D-Day: National Competition Day.
  • D +1: Return trip to your home city.

II. Venue & Logistic

11. Where will competition the National Spelling Bee be held?

The main competition will take place at Balai Sarbini, Jakarta.

Parents and guardians will be directed to a designated Holding Area located at Alun Alun Nusantara, on the on the Street Level of Lippo Mall Nusantara, which is directly connected to Balai Sarbini. This arrangement helps ensure a focused competition environment and minimizes distractions inside the competition hall.

Yes, to ensure an efficient schedule, the competition will be divided into two batches (1st Group: Group C & Group D). 2nd Group: Group A & Group B).

 

The event will start punctually according to each session’s schedule.

  • Session 1 (1st Group: Groups C & D): 
Participants are expected to arrive at the registration area in the registration area located at Alun Alun Nusantara, on the Street Level of Lippo Mall Nusantara, between: 06:30 – 08:00 AM WIB or no later than 30 minutes before the session begins.
  • Session 2 (2nd Group: Groups A & B): 
Participants are expected to arrive at the same registration area between: 08:00 – 09:30 AM WIB or no later than 30 minutes before the session begins.

Timely arrival is important to ensure smooth registration and preparation before entering the competition area.

Yes. All participants are required to re-register on-site at the designated registration area located at Alun Alun Nusantara, on the Street Level of Lippo Mall Nusantara.
During re-registration, participants will receive a QR Code, which will be used as:

  • Entry access to the competition area, and
  • Official identification for their individual answer sheets.

Participants are advised to complete the re-registration process promptly upon arrival to ensure smooth access to the competition area.

No. During the Preliminary Round and Semifinal Round, companions are not allowed to enter the competition venue. However, during the Final Round, companions are permitted to enter according to the committee’s instructions and must still comply with all regulations in place at the event location.

Participants should be dropped off at the entrance of Balai Sarbini, where the committee will assist to ensure smooth and safe flow for all participants.

Participants should be picked up at the exit of Balai Sarbini. The committee will organize the pick-up according to competition categories to ensure smooth and safe flow for all participants.

III. Competition Rules & Attire

19. What are the general rules of the competition?

The competition consists of staged difficulty levels and typically includes both Written and Spoken rounds. Participants must adhere strictly to the time limits and procedures announced by the Announcer/Judges. All official rules are outlined in the rulebook provided by English 1.

Yes, for fairness and security, strict rules apply:

  1. Participants are NOT allowed to wear any clothing with pockets during the competition rounds.
However, due to room temperature, participants are recommended to wear long sleeves without pockets.
  2. Smartwatches: Participants are strictly NOT allowed to wear any form of smartwatch or electronic device (including fitness trackers or recording devices) during the competition.

These items are prohibited to maintain the integrity of the competition and prevent any possibility of electronic assistance or concealment of materials.

Participants who arrive late are still allowed to join the competition. However, there will be no repetition of any words missed due to tardiness.

Participants may present proof of participation, state their full name, and show an official ID (such as a student card or similar) to the committee at the registration desk for verification and on-site re-registration.

IV. Scoring & Communication

24. Where will the children be during the competition rounds?

All participating children will be inside the Balai Sarbini competition hall. They will remain separate from their parents/guardians during their competition time to ensure concentration and compliance with the rules.

Information regarding which children have advanced to the next stage will be communicated immediately through two primary channels:

  1. Official Leader Board: Results will be prominently displayed on the central Leader Board visible in the Parents’ Holding Area.
  2. Official WA Chat: The competition results will also be shared via a text announcement in the Official WhatsApp (WA) Group Chat managed by the English 1 team.

Results for each round will be announced shortly after the final scores have been tallied for that particular batch/group.

V. Others & Winner

27. What is the benefit for competition winners?

Winners of the 18th National Spelling Bee will receive prizes and official recognition from English 1 Indonesia, as well as from partners supporting the organization of this national competition.
In addition, winners are also eligible to register their competition certificates in the Puspresnas (National Achievement Center) system under the Ministry of Education.

The English 1 Indonesia team will assist with the registration of the 18th National Spelling Bee results into the Puspresnas (National Achievement Center) system under the Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen).Only certificates belonging to winners and the top 10 national finalists will be eligible for registration and nationally recognized.

Participants may also independently register their certificates through their respective schools via the Kurasi Prestasi Talenta platform under Kemendikdasmen.
